Looking back at K and Formnext 2019

Dressler Group: powder made to measure.

Messeauftritt DG formnext 2019

Conversations at the trade fair reveal that the industry trend is clearly moving towards customised powders for very specific applications and processes. As a powder designer, Dressler Group (DG) is ideally positioned to meet these needs. In fact, it always has been.

Hot topic number 1: Spherical Powder Technology (SPT) and individual powder design
Over the course of some three years, DG has made the patent-pending SPT process ready for series production – to the delight of visitors to the trade fair stand. A total of 85 discussions were held with interested parties from all over the world. Concrete projects were addressed in 45 further discussions. "The response to our SPT has always been extremely positive. But now that the technology is ready for series production, it is taking on a whole new dynamic," says Jan Dressler, Managing Partner. Thanks to SPT, powders can now be created from high-performance polymers that cannot otherwise be pulverized. This opens up entirely new applications for DG customers that were equally impossible before.

To coincide with the market launch of SPT, Dressler Group set itself a challenge with the "Mission now possible" campaign. Registration is still open: www.dressler-group.com

Given the tremendous pressure to innovate that currently weighs on virtually every industry, it is not just a matter of SPT arriving at just the right time; equally important is DG's overall ability to design plastic powders on the dot. "There is a need to manufacture ever faster, more efficiently and more ecologically – without compromising on quality. This is extremely challenging for our customers, and we are the ideal partner to enable them to succeed," says Jan Dressler. After all, the Meckenheim-based company's vision is: "Always the right powder for you". That means all our products are made-to-measure, not off-the-peg.

Since additive manufacturing/3D printing has emerged as a supplement or even an alternative to many conventional production processes, the demand for individually produced powders has been on the rise. Only customized powders can ensure that the manufacturing process runs smoothly and that the end product meets the requirements.

However, individually produced powders are also crucial to achieving optimum results in other manufacturing processes and applications. Moreover, Dressler Group can demonstrate an extremely high level of material efficiency: "Our figure stands at over 97 percent. This is absolutely extraordinary and never ceases to impress our customers," says Jan Dressler. Because high material efficiency translates into fewer rejects, less time, money and energy spent, and a smaller ecological footprint.

Another extraordinary feature is DG's own Technical Centre, which sees great demand from customers. Here customised powders can be produced and tested from tiny quantities and scaled up to a volume of 1,000 kg. Large batches are then produced on the regular plants.

Hot topic number 2: The new Innovation Campus
DG's expertise has always been valued as an independent service, and this trend continues to grow. That is why DG is bundling the work of its R&D facilities – Innovation Lab and the Technical Centre – at the newly established Innovation Campus, and expanding these activities, conducted both internally and with customers and universities as external partners. A few of the forward-looking topics on the agenda:

  • Recruiting working students and supervising their scientific work
  • Supporting new and existing customers with trials
  • Developing new plants and processes, including for new (bio)plastics
  • Developing new grinding methods
  • Establishing a Centre of Excellence for 3D Printing
  • Organising conferences and congresses

"In our day-to-day business and at every trade fair – including this year's K and Formnext – our customers confirm that they feel well advised, that they are in good hands with us. With the new Campus, our aim is to build upon this experience and make it more systematic," says Jan Dressler.
